So we found the BDSM version of Supahead? or My take on the book Whip Smart by Dante Posh*
"It's an acting job, " I said, shrugging. "Probably one of the most reliably paying acting gigs in New York" - Melissa Febos, "Whip Smart."
A few weeks ago, I read on the front page of the NY Post - http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/queen_of_pain_my_life_as_midtown_lfUImSo46RW3gHzsu kKXSI/0 - a story about an upcoming memoir being released; written by a former Dominatrix turned college professor at a local institution.
As I looked at the photo of the author, I was struck with familiarity with her. "where the heck have I seen this chick?", I said to myself.. Then, I get a phone call from a old friend that confirmed where I've seen her before..
"Oh yeah, that's right..." I gave the side eye and went on my business.. "Good for her for writing a book.."
But then, something told me to read the entire article and do a little reading on other sites about this book. After doing so, I regretted giving my good wishes, because I sensed something ugly was about to be told in her book. Let's be honest - if it's a BDSM/Fetish theme story in the NY Post front page - it's not bound to be good..
Fast forward to yesterday, when, during lunch, I received the book from a friend. Based on how she was recalling some portions of the book, I could tell that she was a bit disturbed by the contents in the book. Let alone, upset that she paid the $26 for it at the bookstore. As I laughed at the hilarity of her ranting about the money spent on this book, I immediately handed her the money for it. She pushed it away..
"D, Buy me lunch and this monstrosity is yours.. I wouldn't DARE ask you to pay me full value for this filth. It's downright disgusting.." I agreed and slipped the bills into the check folder the waiter placed on the table. I look at the book with curiosity.. What the hell is in this book that got my girl so uppity? Well, I was bound to find out..
As some of you may know, from reading my twitter feed from yesterday, you know/saw some of my real-time reaction as I was reading the book.. For those that haven't seen it, let me recall some of the "gems" in this book.. 276 pages of what I call FUCKERY.. I'm sorry.. I meant, Fudgery (nods to the ScarFace kids)
In this book:
- woman gets involved into Domination for monetary reason (which isn't here or there, but - see next point)
- said woman had a drug habit PREVIOUS to joining the dungeon she worked at, making a good argument that she got involved to help finance her habit (see what publisher's weekly wrote: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Whip-Smart/Melissa-Febos/e/9780312561024/?itm=1\ #TABS).
- woman admits that she shot up her heroin/cocaine AT the dungeon (page 75-76, 90, 99 to list a few examples...).
- woman NAMES clients and their proclivities, to the extent that anyone in the scene for 5+ years can immediately recognize who these people are.. (pages 113 perfect example, but they are throughout the book).
She did more stuff, like describe getting clean and school, and her relationships. Yet, the underlined NY Post revelation is all about her being a "Midtown Dominatrix," I am only giving you what they were advertising promoting, exploiting.. Damn, can't seem to get it right.. Sorry, what am I trying to say? Oh yeah.... SENSATIONALIZING!
While we're on the subject of the NY Post article, let me also note: in the article, there was NO mention of her drug use.. Why is that?? HMMMMMM...
Let me also note that she was on a national radio program, speaking about her experience at the dungeon.. Only ONCE (near the end of the interview) did she mention about her drug use, and even then, it was downplayed (my words). The interviewer was more interested in the type of people and the type of scenes the writer engaged in with her stint as a Dominatrix. If you read the book, you will agree that the interview was not quite representative of the book that this writer was promoting..
So are you cringing over the thought that this chick was high while doing sessions? One being described in the book as quite invasive? I know that I did when I read some of the sessions she was describing.. I cringed even more at the sight of the men's "names" and scenes that were being mentioned. What kills me is that those that read this book, those that wrote "praise," as displayed on this book, see her story as a view into the world of a Dominatrix.. I'm sorry, not at all.. A view of a druggy posing as a Dominatrix, yeah, but as a straight out Dominatrix? Get out of here!!
After reading this book, I am thankful for the following:
- that she's "clean" now. (as one familiar with the junkie subculture has noted to me, "junkies can lie," so we'll hope that what she's saying is true about her being clean.)
- that the clients she’s seen are still (I hope) alive. I'm certain that those who do get to read this book will take a sigh of relief knowing that nothing happened during their session stint with her. But I bet they are also a bit upset that their cover is "blown" just for her financial gain.
- that the ladies working with her didn't experience any type of sticky situations such as unknowingly being in the same room with this woman's "snacks." One visit by law enforcement (LE) in which they find it can be quite uncool, you think?
- that those clients that weren't "partiers" (as she disclosed about some in her book) weren't subjected to being unknowingly around her "snacks." Again, one visit by LE can fudge up a day, right??
This writer is on the same level as Superhead, the Tiger Woods mistresses, and Kat Stacks - all mentioned, keen on selling their little experiences for a buck and media attention.
Well, congrats to the writer - when others with more love for the bdsm subject, ACTUAL stories and overall, more class in being a bit discreet on those contained in the stories they want to tell, are STILL struggling to get looked over for consideration.
Not only did she get her book published, but also, threw a curveball in this industry for the vanilla folk to ingest, debate, and sensationalize. In addition, she outted several people that I'm certain didn't/wouldn't want their experiences broadcast for general consumption like it is being advertised in this book.
At the end of the day, who benefits? That's right, the former junkie..
Media, I wouldn't call her a Dominatrix. Instead, I would call her a junkie opportunist..
If you haven't read the book, then I suggest renting/borrowing/bartering for it or speaking to someone that has. Not worth spending money on owning such filth.
